About Me |

|
Coming from a family with 7 generations of musical background, it was only fitting for me to embrace music myself. I started playing the drums at age 5 and performed at various talent shows and at church. I began playing the steel guitar at age 9. My grandpa has always loved steel guitar and had an old Show Bud for years before he got his Derby when I was about 8 years old. One day I decided, like most kids would, that I wanted to play with papaw’s guitar. So I sat down behind his steel and started hitting the strings with his thumb pick. (which at the time was about 3 sizes too big for my little fingers) He started to show me a few things on it. First just some single notes, then progressing into a few basic chords. I started out with a beginner’s book with “The Wreck of the Old 97” in single notes. Once I had messed around with the beginner’s book for a while, he began to teach me my first real, full chord song “I Fall to Pieces.” I played that song at a talent show when I was in the 5th grade and won 1st place. I then went to a regional talent show and played it again and won 1st place there. I started playing for the Kentucky Opry when I was 10 years old and stayed there for 6 years. I played pedal steel there mostly, but also played some traditional lap steel with tributes to older country artists. I also played bass there. When I was 14 I began playing upright bass and singing harmony with a teen bluegrass band. We toured for over a year and made a cd as well. We were contracted at Dollywood in the “Bluegrass and BBQ Festival” for 22 days doing 4 shows each day. I also toured with the Marshall Miller Band in 2009 for just over 6 months. We did shows in the tri-state area and performed with Confederate Railroad and David Allan Cole. I also got to perform with BJ Thomas twice. I started doing steel guitar shows when I was 14. The first one I performed at was the Central KY Steel Guitar club’s quarterly show. After that I began playing more steel shows and got to perform at the International Steel guitar Convention in St. Louis in 2009. I also play drums, bass, upright bass, dobro, lap steel, mandolin, piano, and guitar. I love music. I am greatly influenced by ALL steel guitarists because everyone is different and unique. Passion and devotion is what drives my music and I believe that anyone who has passion and devotion towards music is a GREAT musician regardless of skill level or what people may say. My favorite steel guitarists would have to include: Jeff Newman, the one and only John Hughey, Doug Jernigan, Tommy White, Ron Elliot, Herb Remington, Herby Wallace, Russ Hicks, my good friend Chubby Howard, and several others. I hope to meet you all some day and hope you enjoy my website, videos, cd’s, and songs!! Remember- “Steel with a grin!” -Chris |
